Class Explained: Super Calisthenic Sexpialidocious

You might’ve already seen our new schedule, which is now live on our website.  However, as we got a few questions about new members about the names of these classes, we thought we’d explain a few of these in our blog. First off: Super Calisthenics Sexpialidocious. Together with Arno Schurmans, we dive into the details of the new calisthenics trend that originated in the US.

“Calisthenics consists of bodyweight exercises on the ground and on the bars. They are intended to increase body strength, condition, control and mobility, through movements such as pulling or pushing oneself up, crawling, jumping, hanging or swinging,” explains Arno, who himself teaches the class at The Brick.

The idea of using only your body weight, or the tools we find in our natural environment for resistance, has been around for decades. Especially for the days that you can’t seem to bring yourself to the gym, or if you’re in another country, it’s a method that can help you continue your training. As it’s very DIY, it’s easier to commit, but that doesn’t make it an easy training.

“When performed vigorously and with variety, calisthenics can provide the benefits of muscular and aerobic conditioning, in addition to improving psychomotor skills such as balance, agility and coordination. The essence of calisthenics is the ability to move freely without any restriction blocking your full strength and potential. It is the art of using one’s body weight as resistance in order to develop physique.”

To learn more about the class, we’d like to invite you to join us during next Monday’s class at 17:30.
